Base ten numeration or decimal system of numeration is a number system that uses ten different digits to write numbers. These digits are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6,7,8 and 9.

Example the number 36 356 907 has digits 0, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9.

Base 10 number system is widely used on most parts of Math. It is often the first way kids learn how to count.

a) The place value of each digit in base ten numeration.

The place value of digits in a number starts with a small value in position from the right of a number to a large value in position to the left of a number.

The values in position start with ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands and so on.

Example the number 234 371 990. We can write this number as:

234 371 995 = 2× 100 000 000 +3 ×10 000 000 + 4 × 1 000 000 +3× 1 00 000 + 7 × 10 000 + 1 × 1000 + 9× 100 + 9 × 10+ 5×1

This is called the expanded form of the number 234 371 995

The place value of the digits in the number 234 371 995  are as follows:

2 is in hundred millions

3 is in ten millions

4 is in millions

3 is in hundred thousands

7 is in ten thousands

1 is in thousands

9 is in hundreds

9 is in tens

5 is in ones
